April 19 voting day declared holiday for Greater Jakarta

April 19, the day of Jakarta's gubernatorial runoff election, has been declared a public holiday for anyone working in the capital, even if they do not vote.

"The holiday also affects people who reside in Bogor, Tangerang and other satellite cities [as long as they work in Jakarta]," acting governor Sumarsono said at City Hall on Thursday.

He said that the decision would be based on a regulation currently being drafted at the Home Ministry.

He said that he hoped all eligible voters would participate in the election and would not take advantage of the holiday just to go on a vacation.

"There are still Jakartans who do not care about civic matters," he said.

He said that people should go on vacation only after they cast their votes to determine Jakarta's leadership for the next five years.
