Jakarta's Iconic Gelora Bung Karno Stadium Spruced Up for 2018 Asian Game

Jakarta's iconic Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, named after Indonesia's first president Soekarno and opened for the first time for the 1962 Asian Games, is being refurbished for another Asian Games next year.

The 90,000-capacity stadium will host the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2018 Asian Games in September and October. Renovation works on the complex are expected to continue until October this year.

The stadium is currently being fitted with a high-tech, "shadowless" lighting system and its field relaid with a special type of soft couch grass.
