Greater Jakarta: Man nabbed for Rp 1.9b haul from ATMs

The Jakarta Police's general crimes unit has nabbed a man for allegedly manipulating ATMs and withdrawing Rp 1.9 billion (US$142,500) without decreasing the balance of his savings account.

General crimes unit chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Budi Hermanto said on Tuesday that the modus operandi of the perpetrator, identified only by the initials NKM, 43, was quite advanced as he could withdraw money from ATMs on multiple occasions without his account being debited.

Budi said that NKM, who was a currently unemployed information technology (IT) technician, had admitted carrying out the illegal withdrawals several times, including withdrawing money from an ATM machine in a mini-market in Cengkareng, West Jakarta, in August.

"He withdrew money many times from a Hyosung-branded ATM. He prevented the withdrawal from being detected by the sensor of the machine, so the amount [in his account] did not decrease," he said, as quoted by tribunnews.com.

Budi said the suspect had admitted learning the technique from a hacker on the internet. "He made hundreds of withdrawals until he had Rp 1.9 billion," he said.

NKM reportedly told the police that the money was used to buy a car and smartphone, and that only Rp 15.7 million of the money remained.

The arrest was based on CCTV camera footage from an ATM booth. The police confiscated ATM cards of several banks, a smart phone, a car and Rp 15.7 million in cash.

"The suspect will be charged under Article 363 of the Criminal Code on theft with a maximum penalty of seven years in prison," said Budi.
