East Jakarta vaccinates 100 dogs, cats

One hundred pets were administered with the anti-rabies vaccine in Cakung, East Jakarta, during a mass vaccination program initiated by the East Jakarta administration to celebrate World Rabies Day on Sept. 28.

A total of 58 dogs and 42 cats at the Metland Ujung Menteng residential area were administered the free vaccine from the East Jakarta administration on Wednesday.

East Jakarta secretary Rusdiyanto said the mass vaccination was conducted in the residential area because it was adjacent to Bekasi, West Java.

"Some areas around Jakarta are still considered rabies endemic so we're holding the vaccinations here to prevent the spread of rabies," Rusdiyanto said on Wednesday as quoted by timur.jakarta.go.id.

The East Jakarta Fisheries, Agriculture and Food Security Agency said it expected to vaccinate 5,211 animals in the area until the end of the year.

From January to October, the agency vaccinated 2,688 cats, 1,353 dogs, 24 weasels and 20 monkeys.

Meanwhile, all five municipalities and one regency in Jakarta are set to hold a mass vaccination of animals from Oct. 3 to Oct. 8 to prevent the spread of rabies. (cal)
