The Jakarta administration has started demolishing hundreds of illegal buildings around seven low-cost apartments (Rusun) in Jakarta.
Melly Budiastuti of the Jakarta Public Works and Public Housing Agency's development and public participation division, said there were 350 illegal buildings in the seven locations.
Melly said 61 illegal buildings were found in Rusun Bidaracina in East Jakarta; 47 in Bendungan Hilir, 38 in Tanah Tinggi and 43 in Karet Tengsin in Central Jakarta; 58 in Tambora and 85 in Petamburan in West Jakarta; and 18 in Tebet Barat, South Jakarta.
She added that the 61 buildings in Bidaracina and those in Bendungan Hilir had been demolished few weeks ago.
"We will demolish those illegal buildings gradually. Now, there are still 289 in several Rusun," she said on Sunday as quoted by kompas.com. (rdi/syl)
