Pride is a big motivator for violence amongst young people in Indonesia, with rivalries between high schools often blowing up into large-scale brawls. There is also a disturbing culture of street harassment in Jakarta. These two problems created a violent mix of pride and jealousy that authorities say led to the death of one man in Central Jakarta on Monday.

According to police, SH was walking with his girlfriend, identified as SAN, on Jalan Kramat Pulo Gundul at around 10:30 pm. The couple passed by a group of youths on their motorcycles including TF. The 20-year-old and his friends allegedly called out to SAN and catcalled her, which enraged SH. the 17-year-old challenged them to a fist fight but ultimately left, only to return soon after.
"The perpetrator was upset and jealous [because they had harassed his girlfriend]. So he left the scene and returned with a sharp weapon," Central Jakarta Police Chief Suyudi Ario Seto said as quoted by Tempo yesterday.
The couple went to SH's house to get a knife and returned to the street where TF and his friends were still hanging out. Seeing he had a knife, TF tried to flee on his motorcycle but he ran into another motorcycle parked on the side of the road.
Immediately, SH caught up with him and stabbed TF in the chest several times, killing him on the spot.
Police tracked down and arrested SH about 9 hours later while riding a public bus. He has been charged with premeditated murder and could face up to 20 years in prison.
