All of Jasa Marga’s toll gates in Jakarta will only accept card payment by Oct. 31

PT Jasa Marga, the state-owned company operating the majority of toll roads in Jakarta, is going on a drive to digitize payments on all of its toll gates in the capital.

According to Warta Kota, the company is currently removing manual payment facilities, i.e. toll booths, and replacing them with automatic gates that open with the swipe of certain e-payment cards issued by major banks in Indonesia. Their target is that all transactions at toll booths will be cashless by October 31 of this year.

Starting October 31, transactions on all Jasa Marga toll roads ONLY ACCEPT CASHLESS.

The company is gradually implementing the change throughout the city, and have announced the dates for specific toll gates to go fully digital on major toll roads like Jakarta-Cikampek, Jagorawi, the inner ring road and Prof. Ir. Dr. Soedijatmo.

The cards that are accepted by the electronic toll gates are e-Toll and e-Money by Bank Mandiri, Brizzi by BRI, Flazz by BCA, and TapCash by BNI. There was a public outcry earlier this week when Bank Indonesia, Indonesia's central bank, said that the aforementioned banks must charge a nominal fee for every time customers top up the credit on their cards, but the banks have since said that they wouldn't charge their customers as long as there are no official regulations requiring them to.

While switching to card payment and automated gates was deemed necessary to increase efficiency on toll roads, workers unions in Indonesia said that it would affect around 20,000 toll road workers, who stand to lose their jobs.
