A Hong Kong Airlines flight heading from Denpasar, Bali, to Hong Kong experienced severe turbulence over Borneo and had to turn around and land back at Ngurah Rai Airport.

The plane returned to Bali about 2 ½ hours after it took off and landed safely at 4:34 a.m. (2034 GMT Friday).

Trikora Harjo, PT Angkasa Pura I (AP I) general manager at I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, said that the evacuation process was conducted by a joint team of AP I, the Ngurah Rai Port Health Office, and the Bali Disaster Mitigation Agency.

Three ambulances were sent to help in evacuating the passengers and crew, totaling 216 people. Most of the casualties suffered head bruises and there were no serious injuries.

There was no damage to the plane, but an inspection was under way.

It was the second turbulence incident involving an Airbus 300-200 in Indonesia this week.

On Wednesday, 31 passengers and a crew member aboard an Etihad Airways flight were also injured when their plane ran into sudden and severe turbulence about 45 minutes before landing at the Soekarno Hatta International Airport, in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta.
