Prayers, cheers as total eclipse darkens swath of Indonesia

NASA says the eclipse would be best seen in parts of Indonesia.

A solar eclipse began sweeping across the vast Indonesian archipelago on Wednesday, with hordes of sky gazers set to watch the spectacle, which will be marked by parties, prayers and tribal rituals.

Partial eclipses were reported at the same time in locations including Singapore, Hawaii and the westernmost parts of the contiguous United States. Including those that have already taken place, a total of only 146 solar eclipses is expected to be visible from Singapore between 1700 and 2100.

This region can only be observed during total solar eclipses when the Sun's bright face is completely blocked by the Moon.

Central Indonesia will see this all happen roughly an hour later by their clocks, and eastern Indonesia will see it all go down about an hour after that in their time zone.

In Palembang, a Sumatran city of more than 1.4 million people, thousands gathered at the Ampera bridge from well before dawn.

The partial eclipse will commence at 23:19 GMT and the total eclipse at 00:15 GMT, with the moment of maximum shadow at 01:59 GMT.

If you're lucky enough to see it a person, make sure to wear protective eyewear.

Birds appeared confused and disorientated as darkness fell again shortly after dawn.

"It was spectacular", said Daniel Orange, a 52-year-old American tourist from California, who was watching the total eclipse on the small western island of Belitung. The eclipse, which from the vantage point of Jakarta produced an impressive crescent, was also streamed on monitors around the planetarium.

NASA had sent a team of scientists to Indonesia, where researchers documented the total solar eclipse for an experiment aimed at measuring a certain kind of light scattered by electrons in the lower corona.
