TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Shafruhan Sinungan, chairman of the Jakarta Organization of Land Transportation Owners (Organda), said that around 10,000 units of taxis stopped operating as a result of online-based transportation application.
Shafruhan claimed that as many as 20,000 people had been unemployed, since a unit of taxi was operated by two drivers.
"They told me that they could not compete with app-based transportations," Shafruhan told Tempo on Sunday, March 13, 2016.
Shafruhan admitted that he had been in communication with the central government. However, Shafruhan said that the central government had not taken steps yet to address the issue.
Shafruhan viewed that app-based transportations violated Law No. 22/2009 on traffic and land transportation. According to Shafruhan, black-plated cars should function as public transportations. Shafruhan added that the tariff for the black-plated taxis was problematic, since they did not use the standard tariff set by the government.
Shafruhan revealed that the issue with the app-based transportation should be addressed by the Communications and Information Ministry, since it issued policies on apps and technology.
