This region can only be observed during total solar eclipses when the Sun's bright face is completely blocked by the Moon. "The main advantage of the total solar eclipse is seeing much closer to the sun's surface".

A rare total solar eclipse will be visible in a broad arc across the country later. It also prompted some Indonesian towns to switch on their street lights during the morning.

We'll actually be able to see a total solar eclipse soon!

A solar eclipse happens when the moon casts a shadow on the earth as it passes between the earth and sun.

A solar eclipse began sweeping across the vast Indonesian archipelago on Wednesday, with hordes of sky gazers set to watch the spectacle, which will be marked by parties, prayers and tribal rituals.

The last time a total eclipse occurred over Indonesia was in 1988.

People along a 150km-wide strip running through Sumatra, Borneo and Sulawesi - the path of eclipse totality - will experience a blackout from about 07:00 to 11:00 local time. Unfounded fears and misinformation caused panic, with people papering windows and keeping children indoors.

"It was very annoying that we couldn't see the sun properly", said David Pratama, 18, as jeers of disappointment rose up in the crowd around him as the moon moved across the sun.

Birds appeared confused and disorientated as darkness fell again shortly after dawn.

There was also disappointment for a group of six eclipse chasers who traveled from Canada and the U.S.to Kalimantan.

A partial solar eclipse is seen in Hyderabad, India, Wednesday, March 9, 2016.

A partial eclipse is an astronomical phenomenon that the sun is partially obscured by the moon.

For some of Indonesia's tribes, the eclipse is viewed with apprehension.
